Dr. Mustapha Abdulahi, CENG. MIMECHE.
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi is the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), the apex government institution responsible for national energy policy planning, research, and coordination across Nigeria’s energy sector. He was appointed to this position on 24 October 2023 by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (MIMechE), Dr. Abdullahi is an accomplished mechanical engineer, energy policy strategist, and technology leader with over fourteen years of multidisciplinary experience spanning oil and gas regulation, renewable energy systems, sustainability, space technology, and advanced engineering research.
Born in Kano and originally from Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology and an MSc from the University of Salford. He earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manchester, where he also served as a Research Associate in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering. His doctoral research focused on structural health monitoring for oil and gas infrastructure.
Before leading ECN, Dr. Abdullahi served as Chief of Staff and Senior Technical Adviser to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology. He previously worked with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission and the National Space Research and Development Agency. He has also represented Nigeria in global energy engagements, including the COP28, advancing international collaboration on energy transition and sustainable cooling initiatives.
